Dr Achim Krüger is Professor of Experimental Oncology and head of a research group at the Institute for Molecular Immunology and Experimental Oncology at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technical University of Munich, Germany. Dr Krüger is an expert in the field of tumor metastasis and tumor-host interactions with a specific focus on the signaling function of proteases and protease inhibition in the tumor microenvironment.
Achim Krüger studied biology at the University of Konstanz, Germany. Supported by a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for integrated studies abroad, he was selected to join a program allowing biology students from the University of Konstanz to study virology, molecular biology, and cell biology at the S.U.N.Y. of Stony Brook, New York, U.S.A. in 1988/1989. He received his degree as Diplom-Biologe back at the University of Konstanz in 1991. Dr Krüger was a graduate student at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1994.
Supported by the Ontario Cancer Research Foundation, London, Ontario, Canada and then as a Feodor-Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung, Bonn, Germany, Dr Krüger worked as a Postdoc at the University of Western Ontario, Canada until the end of 1996. Upon his return to Germany in 1997, he joined the Clinical Research Group of the Clinic of Gynecology at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich, where he led a research group. Dr Krüger became a lecturer for Experimental Oncology and took his current tenured position in 2000. He was appointed as a Professor for Experimental Oncology at the Technical University of Munich in 2006 and is holding a lectureship for Molecular Oncology at the Wissenschaftszentrum Weihenstephan of the Technical University of Munich since 2007. Dr Krüger is a member of the Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie in Germany and the American Association for Cancer Research.
